Tadiyendamol - Iruppu 2007 March 23rd - March 25th

Places visited: Nagarahole, Iruupu Falls, Tadiyendamol
Who all: Bhanu, Chetu, Chuman, Vinaya, myself and Josh Machine

Route details:
On Bangalore mysore highway, take a deviation at Sri Rangapatna and drive towards Hunsoor-50Km. Nagarahole another 50 Km from there. Iruppu is close to Nagarahole at 20Km on Gonikoppla route. Enroute to Madikeri from Gonikoppla, take the deviation to Napoklu palace before Madikeri. Reach Kakabe and then Napoklu and you are ready to trek the second highest peak in Karnataka. We took the vehicle till we got out of road.

Was a long weekend (Good Friday) and planned to go out. wanted to tour coastal areas of Karnataka, as it is still unexplored. But due to the heat factor, decided to go for cooler place. The most obvious and closest choice was Madikeri. But where in Madikeri?

Tadiyendamol (highest peak in kodava language) was not conquered yet, so that in addition to a slice of wildlife- Nagarahole and a slice of water - Iruppu Falls was the plan.

Were 8 of us and booked Qualis. But as always there were last minute drop outs. Canceled the Qualis and took out our Josh machine as it was longing for a long drive since long.

Chetu being told will be picked at 10:30 pm went asleep bored of wait. Finally he woke up with our call at 11:50 and left Bangalore exactly @ mid night. Stopped at Maddur Coffee Day as it was time to refresh especially our eyes- you guessed it right :).

Slowly drove to Srirangapatna. Before taking the deviation towards Hunsoor, had a tea bite, time was 3 am. The road was well asphalted!! car was in real Josh!! but still it is mystery, that we took 4 hours to reach Nagarahole. Chetu was tongue-lashing with Vinay, saying he had navigated us through a wrong route. Whatsoever, we found a tusker by road side. we stopped our vehicle and turned off as we usually did. We wanted to have closer look and backed up our vehicle, Mammoth started trumpeting. Got scared and tried to move away from the lovely elephant. Stopped at a distance and tried going back, it again started trumpeting. That was enough to scare us off. This time due to fear or out of sub conscious started the vehicle with a screeching sound.

Reached Nagarahole after the presumedly long drive. Got into the safari bus and were fast asleep. I slept because had to drive all night, but why Bhanu slept who was sleeping all the way, nobody knows!!!

We just wanted the Safari to get over asap and go to Iruppu Falls. This should be in every ones must visit list. Absolutely wonderful place. The coldness and force of the falls took all the pains and tiredness out of us. None of us didn't want to come out of it. Another speciality was we could see rainbow in the water. This was the real refreshment and so called Coffee Day refreshments can be junked.

We usually don't follow a proper diet during our trips. Breakfast was skipped. Mango juice and biscuits compensated for it. By the time we reached Madikeri, we had crossed the lunch time, and was hard to find good lunch. Made away with meals at some Udupi hotel.

We found it out that we could have taken a deviation 20 km ahead to reach Tadiyendamol and need not come to Madikeri.

Reached Kakabe and tried to negotiate Jeeps to ferry us to the point from where we could start our trek. Our budget did not allow us to spend so much. Josh machine said why don't you take me, I'm going to rev you up to the top with ease.
Went to the top in our vehicle and parked it near a house just 1 km from the starting point.

Divided the lugguage equally amongst us and started of with the trek. Chetu was our guide as he had already done this trek. Trekked for an hour and half and reached a plain region. Decided to camp there. None of us knew how to setup the tent, still succeeded. Team work was the secret!!

We tried our hands at cooking. Suman and Chetu were the supposedly experienced guys. They were proved wrong during this stint. Me and suman, kept on pouring more and more water, but the rice never got baked fully. Guys were cursing, all the drinking water has gone into air. Meanwhile, guys had started munching biscuits, and chips which was our fall back option.

We thought we will borrow some water from another group which had camped near by. Suman and I walked towards their camping area. They were very well prepared with the camp fire, chicken roast and had a guide with them. We introduced ourselves. They introduced themselves as "to be entrepreneurs" with most of them having startup companies. One of the guys said, "I'm a free-lancer, I work whenever I want to have a beer", and I said "soon I shall follow you"
The guide showed us the way to a small stream. One of the guys from the other group wanted to join us, but was stopped by their friends. Reason, guide had told them about some superstitious story.

Suman and I went to the stream was total dark, got the water and came back. But the water was not useful as the rice was over cooked and was burnt at the bottom. Bread and uppina kai (pickles) was our dinner :( :(.

Though we were successful in putting up the tent, we had not chosen the right place. It should be placed where the wind speed is slowed down by rocks or in a lower region in the valley. We had set it up in a completely open space and the wind was threatning of uprooting the tent. All that boys wanted was tent to be intact till they are asleep. They didn't care for what might happen later.

When we got up in the morning, luckily the tent was intact and we were saved from the moist. The sun rose and lots of photos taken, we started towards the peak. Was an easy walk and were on the top of Tadiyendamol within 1 hour.

We had carried footbal with us. Chetu claimed to be the world's top(w.r.t altitude) goal keeper with I being the striker. Again lots of photos taken here. One mis-timed photo with the ball out of focus made me look like Nataraja(shiva).

Then ideas started flowing on making Mountain Dew Ads with the players passing around the ball from one mountain to other and finally Goal keeper diving in from no where to save the Goal. Then the solo photo of the world's top football.

Climbed down, packed up the tent and started on our way back. Reached the place where we had parked our car, every one was really hungry and luckily we had bought Water melon which made our breakfast. It was not only delicious but made up for the previous night's dinner. Started from there. Soon everyone was asleep and I was listening to songs and kept myself awake. Just few KMs before mysore we stopped at a hotel and had heavy lunch. Next to the hotel, there was ring road which would have directly taken us outside mysore towards bangalore. But Kalam was to visit some function there and all the roads were blocked. Took the route to Srirangapatna and hit the bangalore highway.

Was a sunday evening and come weekend most of the bangaloreans take the bangalore-mysore road just like that. After spending a peaceful weekend over tadiyendamol, while driving through the Heavy traffic, felt like was pushed back to the boring city life.

I was already thinking of the April 28th- May 1st weekend.
